How Can I Volunteer

The library’s volunteer program is designed to enhance public service to the community.  Volunteers generally provide support services to paid staff and/or work on special projects. Anyone wishing to volunteer should complete and submit our volunteer application. Once complete, a staff member will be in contact. High school students in need of hours for graduation should head to our teen volunteer homepage.

Guidelines to Giving

The North Branford Public Libraries are grateful when people think of donating books and other materials. Every gift to the library must be reviewed and approved by the Library Director before being accepted or included in our collection.

Book Sales

Library-sponsored book sales are a significant source of funding for library programming, museum passes, and many additional services for our patrons. Donated materials that are not added to the library collection are included in our book sales or shared with other local organizations. We gladly accept books of all kinds that are new or gently used including best sellers, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and paperbacks – as well as audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, maps, and local interest items.

We do not accept:

  • Encyclopedias
  • Textbooks
  • Damaged, stained or moldy items
  • Magazines
  • Cassette tapes
  • VHS tapes
  • Vinyl records

Donated materials are accepted year-round during open library hours at both the Atwater Memorial Library 1720 Foxon Road North Branford and the Edward Smith Library 3 Old Post Road Northford. Please do not put donated materials in the book returns or drop off outside the building.

Amazon Wish Lists

Our Amazon wish lists make it possible for community members to give back to our libraries in big ways. The items on each list are in high demand, will meet programming needs or serve as replacements in our collection. Each list is curated by the librarian in charge of that particular department and items will be shipped directly to the library. Donors should add their name and contact information in the “gift note” section to receive formal confirmation of their donation. Below you will be able to click on their linked wish lists by department

Memorial Gifts

We will be happy to work with individuals or organizations on memorial gifts. We purchase many books each year in memory of a loved one, in honor of a new baby, or for other purposes. As with all donations, additions to the collection must be approved by the Library Director. One of the most effective ways to set up a memorial is to discuss with our staff suitable subjects or types of books, and then donate money which our staff will use to purchase materials. All memorials are clearly marked with a message agreed upon by the donor and the library.

Monetary or Gift Donations

Monetary donations to the library are accepted by check, either via mail or in person.

Please make checks payable to the Town of North Branford, reference library gift in the memo, and mail to:

For more information, please contact Lauren Davis, Library Director, at 203-315-6020 or at director@nbranfordlibraries.org. The community’s support through donations greatly enhances our library’s services and programs. Thank you for your generosity!
